Sleep is so important and it really does help elevate your appearance and mindset (I included it in my post on how to glow up for a reason!)
Sometimes it can be really difficult to sleep and you’re trying to think of how to fall asleep fast but then it makes it worse as it’s all you can think about! I’ve struggled many times trying to fall asleep but these tips have helped me drift off quickly and hopefully they’ll help you fall asleep too!
Relax from head to toe
It seems obvious but you could be holding some tension without even realising! Pay attention to each body part and fully relax it. Start from the top and work your way down so you don’t miss anything. This often works for me as I realise I’m clenching my jaw without realising. Relaxation is essential for sleep and sometimes you need to make yourself manually relax. It really does work!
Visualisation
This one is helpful in many ways. Visualisation can help with falling asleep but also is a powerful tool for manifestation. I can’t count the amount of times I’ve found that visualisation has helped me fall asleep and you know that you’ll be entering sleep in a good mood as you often visualise things that you want to bring into existence.
What also makes this hack perfect for quickly falling asleep is the fact that it distracts your mind from the actual process of sleeping and you fall asleep without even realising!
Have a solid sleep routine
Ensure you have a routine for the night. This can include things such as a hot drink, reading, reduced screen time and your skincare routine. This helps you prepare for sleep but having this consistency changes your mindset so that these things are associated with sleep. A good night routine doesn’t have to be complex but having a few set steps to help you prepare for bed can be really beneficial.
You can also try adding some self care into your night routine – I have a list of 60 ideas you can get inspiration from here.
Try to stay awake
This one does sound counter-productive as this post is about how to fall asleep quickly and easily but this one psychologically tricks your mind and works amazingly!
By trying to stay awake, your body will fight against it and naturally want to sleep. Whereas if you’re desperately trying to sleep, you’ll get stressed and that is the last thing you want to be when trying to sleep as you’ll be too tense. As mentioned before, a relaxed state is the perfect state that will aid sleep.
Journalling
Journalling is very good for your mindset and sometimes, you just need to clear your head and pouring all of this onto a page does the trick.
When I’ve had an emotional day, or I’m worried about something, I find that talking it out or even writing it all out helps me forget about it for a short while or lifts some of the weight. This makes me feel calmer and I am able to sleep better. Sometimes having it all laid out can also give you clarity and this will aid in falling asleep massively!
Set the right environment
Where you sleep can make all the difference to how easily you actually fall asleep. Having optimal temperatures makes falling asleep so much easier!
I personally prefer a cooler room to sleep in as it means I can add more covers if needed and it feels cosier. Investing in a fan has been a life saver for falling asleep.
Some people also need complete darkness to be able to fall asleep so having blackout curtains or an eye mask, may make it a lot easier to fall asleep. Try and think about the conditions of your bedroom that you fall asleep easily in and try to create that every night.
Breathing exercises
You’ve probably heard this one before but it really does help you fall asleep quicker! This is probably for a variety of reasons too.
When you sleep, you’re naturally breathing deeper so forcing yourself to do this when you’re awake, is making your body stimulate its state when you’re asleep so you effortlessly enter sleep.
It could be due to you doing something that is quite mundane and you’re focusing on something that isn’t sleep. You’ll eventually get tired of counting your breathing and you’ll fall asleep quickly and easily.
The final reason is because deep breathing helps calm you down. If you are stressed or anxious, then deepening your breathing can bring around a sense of calmness which is the underlying ingredient to any good night of sleep!
Supplements
The sleepy girl mocktail was a viral TikTok trend but it did seem to have some science-backed ingredients which made it so effective! This drink used magnesium glycinate which has been shown help relaxation and promote sleep. It also used tart cherry juice which contains natural melatonin which has been known for years to be a holy grail sleep supplement.
In the UK, melatonin is prescription-only so if you struggle with sleep, the sleepy girl mocktail may be the tool you were missing! In the US, melatonin is easily accessible and may be worth a try if you struggle to fall asleep easily.
Think of as many random words as possible
This one probably sounds the weirdest but it works so well for me! I lay and just think of as many words as possible. I don’t make them all related in any way, I just accept whatever word enters my mind.
Due to this being such a mindless activity, I find I’m able to fall asleep easily! Some people like to do this but make all the words start with the same letter but personally, having all the words just come to me without me using too much thinking, makes it easier for me to fall asleep quicker!
Blink quickly
Blink as fast as you can for around 10-20 seconds. Another strange one but it works as your eyes start to feel heavy which will trick your mind into thinking your tired.
This is also good if you’re feeling like you can’t keep your eyes shut. Having your eyes work so hard will make them shut automatically. In turn, having your eyes stay shut, increases the likelihood of falling asleep.
I hope you’ve enjoyed my top 10 tips on how to fall asleep easier and I hope you’ve found a new hack that you may not have considered and will help you fall asleep the next time you’re struggling!
